As observed preceding, much of LA jurisprudence is descended from the Napoleonic Code; the attachment to French juristic customs roots from its period as a French settlement. Puerto Rico is as well a civil law jurisdiction of the United States of America. All the same, the felonious jurisprudence of both jurisdictions has been inevitably changed by case law determines and the domination of the federal Constitution.
Moreover, Puerto Rico is as well singular in that it is the only United States. jurisdiction in which the regular working language of courtroom legal proceedings, legislative acts, ordinances, and common law is Spanish. All states, the federal authorities, and most dominions apply American English as their functional linguistic communication. A few states, like California, do supply certain courtroom forms in various languages for the appliance of immigrants and naturalised citizens. But American law as formulated through legislative acts, ordinances, and common law is all of the time in English, lawyers are asked to acquire and pass the bar examination in English language, judges listen spoken argumentation and give orders from the bench in English, and testimonial and written documents originating in other languages is translated into English before being integrated into the formal record of a lawsuit.
